At approx 3:58pm on 4/2/10 the Hampton Emerg. Squad(Sta.13) and the North County EMS Partnership(27-51) along with Hampton Fire Co(Sta.13) and Lebanon Twp Fire Dept(Sta.19) were dispatched to the Musconetcong River near New Hampton Rd for a reported overturned canoe in the middle of the swollen river with no occupants visible. Upon arrival of 27-51 and Chief 135, Clinton Water Rescue Team(Sta.45) was requested to the scene to access the canoe to check for victims.
Witnesses said the canoe had appeared sometime during the day, because it had not there in the morning. Hampton and Lebanon Twp units stood by on shore until Clinton Rescue arrived with their water team and boat. The boat was launched into the river and the team made contact with the overturned canoe, after multiple attempts to try to dislodge it using a pike pole from the boat, it was decided to attach a rope to the canoe and have the firefighters on shore try to pull it out. After two attempts the canoe was dislodged and pulled to shore.
Fortunately it appeared the canoe had been unoccupied for some time and may have just washed off someone property. All units had cleared the scene by 5pm.
