At approx. 0258 on 3/28/10 the Hampton Fire Co(Sta.13), Hampton Emerg. Squad(Sta.13) and the Hunterdon Medical Center MICU (EMS 2) were dispatched to a report of an MVA involving a vehicle that struck a tree at the intersection of River Rd and Asbury West Portal Rd in Bethlehem Twp(Hunterdon Co). The first arriving EMT and FF found a pickup truck into a tree head on with very heavy front end damage and the driver was heavily entrapped, neighboring Franklin Twp Fire Dept(Sta.57) was then requested followed by a request for a MEDEVAC helicopter.
Fire units from Hampton and Franklin, along with a BLS unit from Hampton and the MICU from Hunterdon arrived on scene and quickly began treating the patient. Extrication was started, but due to the extensive damage and complexity of the entrapment, mutual aid from Clinton Rescue(Hvy Rescue 4556) was requested to assist. Crews worked for nearly 90 minutes to free the trapped driver. During that time NorthSTAR MEDEVAC had landed at the LZ that was established at the Asbury Fire Station and the flight crew was transported to the scene. Once the driver was freed from the wreckage, he was quickly transported to the waiting MEDEVAC and flown to a local trauma center.
Units remained on scene until NJSP completed their investigation and the tow company removed the vehicle.
